About The Team

Our Mission

The RIT Electric Vehicle Team is a student run organization started in 2012 dedicated to promoting the viability of electric vehicles through practical design of electric motorbikes. The team aims to educate people on the principles of electric vehicle design by engaging students in challenging and rewarding projects that cover a wide variety of academic disciplines.

Our team meets Mondays & Thursdays 7-9pm and Saturdays 10-2pm each week on the Multidisciplinary Design Floor (MSD) each week. The MSD Floor is located on the 4th Floor of Gleason down the hall from our team room.

Team Breakdown

Subteams

Electrical

Electrical team members are responsible for all custom circuit design and electrical system integration for the superbike. Major projects include the design and development of the Battery Management System (BMS), Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU), Low Voltage Subsystem (LVSS), and Thermal Management System (TMS). Recently, these project teams designed, laid-out, and populated new PCBs.

Mechanical

The mechanical team is responsible for the design of various components on the motorcycle, as well as the integration of everything inside the frame. On REV2, the mechanical team used Solidworks software to create a virtual representation of the bike that was used for the design of the frame, battery, cooling loops, motor mounting, and other aspects of the bike. The most recent project involved the design and manufacturing of a new battery pack utilizing cylindrical cells. The mechanical team continuously maintains the superbike, ensuring peak competition performance.

Operations

Operation team members are responsible for all of the behind-the-scenes management that keep EVT in motion. We coordinate communications with our sponsors as well as start dialogues with like-minded organizations in our efforts to build the engineers of tomorrow. We also address any logistical problems that may arise to ensure our team operates efficiently and effectively. With our calculated preparations, imagination becomes reality.

Firmware

The firmware team is a multidisciplinary design team dedicated to building the embedded software systems required to field a competitive race vehicle. The BMS, IMU, and TMS all require extensive firmware development to ensure proper functionality. A subset of the firmware team is currently responsible for designing and maintaining REV2's gateway, which aggregates and records data from the CAN bus. Data collection from each device on REV1 and REV2 allow the team to monitor the health of the bike and ensure proper behavior, as well as benchmarking performance.

Design

Our Design Team provides input during various design reviews, offering a fresh perspective that allows our engineers to approach problems from different angles. Overall, the Design Team has proven to be an invaluable asset to EVT and will continue to grow with the team. The most recent accomplishment of the design team is demonstrated in REV 2's fairing design, including the new company decal scheme and paint job.
